Repetition/Rhythm

Repetition often implies monotony. If a viewer sees the same thing time after time, it will become boring. Rhythm is when the same or like elements are repeated over and over again. These can be seen as shapes repeating, such as triangles or squares. In this photograph of a picket fence, it is a long continuous line of fence posts. If a viewer stares for too long, it becomes boring and unusual. It seems never ending.

In this piece by Jacob Lawrence, shapes and colors are being repeated. There are many defined shapes and colors throughout. There is repetition in the people and also the assumed movement.
