Emil Nolde

The art of woodcut, done by artist Emil Nolde, is a means of achieving great contrast between light and dark, and, as a result, dramatic emotional results. Emil Nolde's Prophet, there is a sense of pain and anguish of the prophet's life, the burden that prophesy entails, and we can also feel the portrait emerging out of the very gouges the knife made in the block. Emil Nolde was one of the first expressionists and is considered to be one of the greatest watercolor painters and oil painter of the 20th century. Most of his works were done in bright vibrant colors, whereas Prophet is black and white, showing depth and emotion. He started working as a craftsman and wood carving, giving him a basis for his woodcut art work. He eventually went on to art school and pursued his dream of being an independent artist.
