Contrast/Variety

Contrast and variety applies to pieces that show contrast of light and dark, thick and thin, big and small, etc. In this painting by Van Gogh, the light from the moon and stars contrasts with the darkness on the left side. The dark mass is up for debate as to what it is but it still contrasts. This painting has few colors, mainly black and blue, but with a small amount of yellow and orange to represent the color of the light in the sky.
