Manipulated Photography

Manipulated photography is the manipulation of a photograph while in the dark room. It also has to do with the aperture, the size of the opening of the lens, which could change the luminescence of the scene. Jerry Uelsmann has his own dark room technique which is called "post-visualization". Uelsmann begins by photographing the natural world and human figures. Sometimes the two do not come together in the end. With his photographs, he uses the techniques of collage and puts the photographs together to make it look like that was the original. In his piece, Untitled, he uses photos of a rock with bird excrement, two hands about to touch, and a grove of trees. When combined, they look like a beautiful picture with the hands painted on the rock. He has two versions, the first with trees and the second with a mountain landscape in the background.
