Portrait Photography

Portrait photography is the capture by means of photography of the likeness of a person or a small group of people, in which the face and expression is dominant. Annie Leibovitz, a portrait photographer from the 1970's, started out taking pictures for Rolling Stone magazine. She used contrast of colors for her work. Much of her work is known for its bright colors and contrast. In this photograph by Annie Leibovitz, Karen Finley at her home in Nyack, New York, it really shows the contrast in colors. It was a controversial photo at the time, due to the nudity, but it was done as a classic nude portrait. This photo represents that not all women are aggressive feminists, but it was simple and Finley was a bit vulnerable in her home. Leibovitz made many statements in her works, about being a female and the feminist movements of the time. This photo is a perfect example.
